Laptop Riser vs. No Riser: What the Research Actually Says About Your Neck
If you've ever finished a workday with a stiff neck or tight shoulders, your laptop's flat position on the desk is very likely part of the problem — and the research on this is more concrete than most workspace advice.
What Happens When Your Laptop Sits Flat
When a laptop sits directly on a desk, the screen ends up well below eye level. To see it, your head tilts forward and down, which is called neck flexion. A small amount of flexion is normal, but sustained flexion for hours at a time changes how much load your cervical spine has to support.
A widely cited biomechanical analysis published in Surgical Technology International (Hansraj, 2014) modeled exactly how much extra force this creates. In a neutral, upright position, the head places roughly 10–12 lbs of load on the neck. At a 15° forward tilt, that load rises to about 27 lbs. At 30°, it's roughly 40 lbs. At 45° — a common angle when looking down at a laptop screen — the load climbs to around 49 lbs. That's the practical equivalent of carrying a small carry-on suitcase on your neck for hours at a time, every single workday.
A More Recent, Direct Study on Laptop Height Specifically
A 2024 study published in the journal Work (Guo et al.) went further and tested this directly. Researchers measured muscle activity in the neck and shoulders (specifically the splenius capitis and upper trapezius muscles) while participants used laptops set at four different screen heights. Using surface EMG sensors and spinal load modeling, they found that raising the screen height measurably reduced head flexion and eased muscle activation in the neck, and specifically delayed the onset of neck muscle fatigue compared to a flat, low laptop position.
In plain terms: elevating your laptop screen doesn't just feel better — it changes the actual muscle workload your neck has to do to hold your head up over the course of a work session.
Laptop Riser vs. No Riser: The Practical Difference
- No riser: Screen sits 8–12 inches below eye level. Neck flexion often reaches 30–45°. Cervical spine load climbs toward 40–49 lbs of effective force, sustained for hours.
- With a riser: Screen is brought closer to eye level, reducing forward head tilt and easing the load being placed on the neck and shoulder muscles, in line with the reduced flexion and delayed muscle fatigue reported in the Guo et al. (2024) study.
Worth noting: raising the screen without also raising the keyboard typically means pairing a laptop riser with an external keyboard and mouse, so you're not reaching upward to type. This is standard ergonomic guidance and avoids trading neck strain for shoulder or wrist strain.
